Woody Jenkins Named Republican Party Chairman for East Baton Rouge Parish

BATON ROUGE — With the conservative sweep in last Saturday’s Louisiana Presidential Primary, the Republican Party in East Baton Rouge Parish has a decidedly more conservative look.

Conservative candidates won virtually all of the seats on the 17-member East Baton Rouge Republican Parish Executive Committee Saturday, and that was apparent at its organizational meeting Tuesday night at the Metro Council chamber.

The party leaders unanimously elected former Rep. Woody Jenkins, a newspaper editor and 28-year veteran of the Louisiana House of Representatives, to a four-year term as Parish Republican Chairman.

In balloting Saturday, Republicans across the parish voted for five members of the Parish Executive Committee at-large and 12 from the 12 Metro Council seats.  At large, voters could vote for five candiates.  Jenkins led the balloting won 93.6 percent of the vote parishwide, former Legislative Auditor Dr. Dan Kyle was second with 87.2 percent, Elizabeth Dent was third with 86 percent, Rev. Tommy French was fourth with 73.2 percent, and former Judge Darrell White was fifth with 72.9 percent.  Tea Party leader Ken McMillian ran sixth, and Willie Lewis was seventh.

Elected from Metro Council districts were Zachary city councilman John Coglan, Jindal youth leader Ryan Cross, realtor Richie Edmonds, businessman Jr. Shelton, former Republican chairman Harold Williams, former Sen. Dan Richey, Col. Phil St. Amant II, Linda Price Thomas, businessman Jay Lindsey, physician Dr. Karla Doucet, school board member Jerry Arbour, and school board member Connie Bernard.

In addition to Jenkins, officers of the parish Republican Party will be vice chairman Connie Bernard, secretary Ryan Cross, and treasurer Dan Richey.  Jenkins appointed Harold Williams to serve on the Executive Committee, along with the four officers.

Jenkins said the Republican Party here will pursue an active agenda to protect individual rights and promote free enterprise, lower taxes, and limited government.
