Metro Council to Consider Endorsing CATS Tax, CATS Legislation Today

BATON ROUGE — At its meeting beginning at 4 p.m. today, members of the City-Parish Metro Council will consider a resolution to endorse the $184 million CATS property tax increase to support the local bus company.  CATS is the Capital Area Transit System, a government-owned entity that runs the local bus company.

The 10-year tax would increase annual property taxes on a $295,000 home by more than $300 a year with even greater increases on local businesses.

Voters in the City of Baton Rouge, City of Baker, and City of Zachary will vote on the tax on April 21.

The tax increase has not previously been before the Metro Council, but members will be asked to “buy in” to the proposition at tonight’s meeting.

Together Baton Rouge, a liberal activist group, is expected to have a large group at the meeting.  The Republican Party of East Baton Rouge Parish and Taxbusters will be among groups opposing the resolutions.
