Who’s Against $184 Million CATS Tax in Baton Rouge?

BATON ROUGE — On Saturday, April 21, voters in Baton Rouge, Baker, and Zachary will have the opportunity to go to the polls and vote on whether to raise property taxes by $184 million to fund the CATS bus system.

CATS, or the Capital Area Transit System, is a government-run bus company.  It has proposed the massive tax increase without the approval of the Metro Council.

Last Wednesday, the Metro Council voted to kill a resolution endorsing the tax.

Who is opposed to this tax increase?

• Taxbusters.us is campaigning against the tax.

• The Republican Party of East Baton Rouge Parish has voted to oppose the tax and launch a campaign to educate voters about the tax.  The party says that, if the tax passes, they will consider filing suit to challenge CATS’ claim that the tax is not subject to the homestead exemption.

• The Louisiana Republican Party voted unanimously at the State Central Committee meeting Saturday to oppose the tax and campaign against it.

• The Tea Party of Louisiana has passed a resolution opposing the tax and will contact its members across the state to rally their opposition.

• The Zachary City Council voted unanimously to oppose the CATS tax.
