Candidates Announce Their Plans for Fall Elections

BATON ROUGE — A host of Republican candidates launched their campaigns in this fall’s election Tuesday at the first-ever Ronald Reagan Newsmaker Luncheon at Café American in Baton Rouge.

The event, hosted by the Republican Party of East Baton Rouge Parish, featured candidates for Mayor-President, Metro Council, State Supreme Court, and 1st Circuit Court of Appeal.

Republican candidates in attendance included:

• Mayor-President — John Conroy and Mike Walker

• Metro Council — Buddy Amoroso, Smokey Bourgeois, John Delgado, Ryan Heck, Chandler Loupe, and Scott Wilson

• First Circuit Court of Appeal — Judge Mike McDonald

• State Supreme Court — Judge Toni Higginbotham and Judge Jeff Hughes.

Many of the candidates, especially Conroy and Walker, emphasized the crime issue and promised to take a hard line.

Republican parish chairman Woody Jenkins, who also serves as editor of the Central City News, told the more than 100 Republican elected officials, candidates, and party activists that 2012 will be a year of decision.  “We must turn around our parish and our nation this fall and elect a new Mayor-President and a new President.”

The event will be held the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 11:30 a.m. at Café Americain on Jefferson.
